Build a useful generator brief

Work through the four steps in order. Record uncertainty rather than forcing an answer: a missing largest-motor starting current is more useful than an assumed value that drives the wrong set.

Electrical service

State nominal voltage, phase, frequency, connection, grounding arrangement, and whether an existing transfer switch or paralleling system must be retained. Include the serving equipment rating and available fault-current information when the generator interfaces with established switchgear.

Load behavior

List running kW and kVA, power factor, largest motor, starting method, UPS or drive loads, load steps, acceptable voltage dip, and expected future capacity. Identify which loads are simultaneous and which can be sequenced after transfer.

Installation

Record altitude, maximum and minimum ambient temperature, indoor or outdoor placement, enclosure and sound expectations, ventilation, exhaust route, fuel type and autonomy, footprint, lifting constraints, cable entry, maintenance clearances, and the distance to the electrical room.

Duty and approvals

Choose standby, prime, continuous, or rental duty based on the real operating model. Add destination country, emissions jurisdiction, project specification, required certifications, test expectations, documentation language, delivery date, and commissioning responsibility. Standards are confirmed by proposed series and market.
